Mission: Jerome

In an effort to keep the adventure meter running in AZ, the next destination selected was Jerome. Similar to Bisbee, Jerome is a former mining town turned interesting place to visit because of its history and unique setting. The city is 100 miles north of Phoenix, situated on Cleopatra Hill, sitting 5200 feet (1585 meters) above sea level
Back in the heyday (1920’s) Jerome produced a billion dollars worth of copper, which put them on the map of serious mining operations. Nowadays Jerome is home to 450 year round residents, but also doubles as a tourist destination due to this rich history and much of the original mining works and buildings still in place (half of the town burnt down in the early days).
Mining tours, art galleries, great places to eat and plenty of quality lodging make up a great day or weekend around these parts. Our mission was a day trip starting in Phoenix around noon, arriving by 1:30 for a nice lunch under perfect sunny skies and temps around 70 degrees (21 C). After the quality eats, we roamed the streets for a couple of hours admiring the architecture, checking out art galleries, the old theatre, but most of all just enjoying a perfect Arizona day in late May.
