What was your first camera

 

While chilling in The SLC between photo shoots, I stopped in to see my main man E-Stone (aka Ethan Fortier) over at his crib. I hadn't seen Stone in ages, so it was time to catch up on life, hear about his latest travel tales (as a Snowboarder Mag Senior Photographer and Technine's Principal Lensman) and figure out how we can find more Stretch and Bob Mix Tapes.

 

At some point we got to talking about our early shooting days and Stone says "...I have the original camera we started with..." I was like "...no way!"

 

So the story goes Ethan and his pops Ray were the owners of Technine, I was team manager. At some point around 1994-1995, Ray said it would be financially smart for T9 if Ethan and I take all photo, catalog and web duties into our own hands and produce everything ourselves, rather than contracting out the work. Ethan and I had never shot a photo or touched a computer for design purposes...but we said "aight...let's do this!" Ethan took the Macintosh; I picked up the Canon EOS 630.

 

We started shooting photos, processing film, punching in commands on the keyboard...learning by trial and error...but we figured it out!

 

Fast forward to April of 1999 when I told Stone I'd be leaving our home base of Utah and moving to Vermont to work with Burton. Stone said "...right on man, stoked for you, but you gotta teach me how to shoot photos!" A two-day crash course on buttons, dials, focus points and processing E-6, Scala and T-Max and Ethan was now officially a photographer! He took to it and never stopped shooting photos since that day (and still designs the Technine materials).

 

It was a real trip to see that camera again...I was so hyped he held onto that beast...a walk down memory lane. Blotto
